The gun laws in the U.S. state of Nevada regulate the possession, sale, and use of guns, ammunition, and firearms in the state of Nevada.

Carrying a shotgun or a loaded rifle in or on a vehicle or along the public way is unlawful and illegal in the state of Nevada, but there are exceptions to this rule. The open carry of guns is generally permitted throughout the state of Nevada. For the open carry in a vehicle, the firearm can be anywhere except concealed on or upon the person without a concealed firearm permit.

Background checks are required for both long guns and handguns in the state of Nevada. In November 2016, Nevada voters approved referendum Question 1, changing the law to require background checks for the private sales of guns. However, Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt was of the opinion that the law is unenforceable.

As stated earlier, Nevada is a "shall issue" state for the concealed carry of firearms. The Nevada county sheriff shall issue a permit to carry concealed firearms to those applicants who qualify under the federal and state law, and who submit an application that is by the provisions of section NRS 202.3657.

To apply for a Concealed Firearm Permit in the state of Nevada, the following conditions have to be satisfied -

  • The person must be 21 years of age (18 if in the military);
  • Must have completed an approved course in firearm safety; and
  • Must demonstrate competence with any kind of handgun.
