Gio Urshela Celebrity Life
Giovanni Urshela, born on the 11th of October, 1991 is a professional baseball player of Colombian nationality. He currently plays for the New York Yankees in MLB.
Urshela was born and raised in the country of Colombia. As a child, he showed an immense talent for baseball. His then trainers have always mentioned how they expected him to great things at a young age with his skill.
Minor League Career
While Urshela was just graduating from high school, he came under the eye of the Cleveland Indians, who offered him his first professional contract, when he was just 17 years old. The Indians, thus signed Urshela who was then an international free agent.
Urshela made his professional debut in the minor league in 2009, when he was selected to play for the Dominican Summer League Indians and Arizona League Indians. Then from 2010 to 2013, Urshela played for various minor league teams in various different leagues.
He always tried to move up the ladder, by playing for a better team in a better league season after season. He played one season for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the Class A Short Season New York Penn League. For the next season, he moved to Lake County Captains of the Class A Midwest League and again made a mid-season change to Carolina Mudcats of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League. For the 2013 season, he moved to Akron Aeros to play in the Class AA Eastern League.
However, before he started the 2013 season, he also played for the Colombia National baseball team, representing his nation in the qualifiers of the World Baseball Classic. For the 2014 season, Urshela started out with the Akron Aeros, but his performance allowed him to move up the ranks, to the Columbus Clippers, playing in the Class AAA International League, for the remainder of the season.
He was extremely consistent in terms of his performance all across the different leagues and teams that he played for. His consistency allowed him to become part of one of Indian’s biggest prospects in the 2015 season, according to the official site of Major League Baseball – MLB.com.
Major League Career
For the beginning of the 2015 season, Indians announced Urshela as a part of their 40 man Roster for the 2015 season. However, Urshela started the 2015 season with the Columbus Clippers, and moved up to the Major League only in June, as a replacement.
Urshela made his debut in MLB on the 8th of June, 2015, where he came on from the bench. However, his first good performance of MLB came in the next game against Seattle Mariners, where he got his first major league hit, major league home run and major league single all in one match.
Urshela began the 2018 season, with the Indians but was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays midway through the season. Urshela played 19 games for the Jays, in which he batted .233 with one home run and three RBIs to his name. He was then assigned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on the 3rd of July. Urshela recorded 91 plate appearances for the Bisons in which he batted .244.
Urshela was then traded to the New York Yankees during August of 2018, where he was assigned to their affiliates Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He remained there until April of 2019, when he received a call back to the Yankees team, in order to replace Miguel Andujar of the Yankees main team, who had gotten injured. Urshela performed well, batting at .352. His performance ensured that he was selected to play for the Yankees main team, even after Andujar returned after injury.
During the 2019 season, Urshela had a bit of an injury scare himself, with a groin injury. However, he came back strongly within 10 days and did not allow a dip in his performance.
