Ivan Manuel Nova, nicknamed “Super Nova”, was born in Palenque, the Dominican Republic in 1987. He is a free agent professional baseball player. Ivan has played MLB for the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Yankees signed on Nova as a free agent in 2004. He played minor league baseball until 2008 when the San Diego Padres selected him for their Rule 5 Draft. However, he was returned to the Yankees again when the Padres decided to not have him on their 25-man roster.


In 2009, Ivan Nova enjoyed a considerably remarkable season in minor league baseball for the Yankees. In 2010, he made his MLB debut with the same team. By 2011, Ivan had registered himself as a key member of their starting rotation. 2012 was a year of struggle for the man but he emerged strongly the next year with the American League Pitcher of the Month Award.

In 2016, he was traded to the Pirated by the Yankees. He won the National League Pitcher of the Month Award in 2017. After the 2017 season ended, Nova was traded to the White Sox.

Childhood and early life

Ivan Nova and his four brothers were raised by father Manuel who was a restaurant manager. As a child, he rooted for the New York Yankees. He went largely unnoticed by scouts until the age of 15. The Boston Red Sox invited Nova to their Dominican Academy when they wanted to sign him. However, Nova declined the offer, as the Sox are an enemy team for the Yankees. At age 17, he was recommended to a Yankees scout by a trainer, who then asked him to attend their Dominican Academy.

Ivan Nova received an $80,000 bonus on signing with the New York Yankees in 2004. Nova could have joined any other team for more money but he insisted on signing with the Yankees.


In 2006, he made his professional debut in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League with the Gulf Coast Yankees. He accumulated a 2.72 ERA and a 3-0 win-loss record. In 2007, he was assigned to the Charleston RiverDogs.

The next year found him pitching for the Tampa Yankees. He didn’t have a particularly good season bu persevered through, to end the season with 109 strikeouts.

In 2008, the Yankees let go of Nova and he was drafted by the San Diego Padres. The Padres returned him back to the Yankees soon after. In 2009, he began playing with the Trenton Thunder. He recorded a decent performance and was promoted to the Wilkes Barre Yankees of the Class AAA International League. After Nova’s delightful performance this season, the Yankees added him to their 40-man roster.

Nova was promoted to the major leagues in 2010. He made his first career major league start in August 2010. He recorded his first MLB victory in August, having struck out seven Chicago White Sox. He made seven starts for the Yankees all year. He entered spring training in 2011 and was named to the Yankees’ starting rotation. He had the longest start in his career in June this year.

After the 2011 season, Ivan Nova was named to the Baseball America All-Rookie Team and finished fourth in the balloting for the AL Rookie of the Year Award.

In 2016, Nova was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He signed a three-year $26 million deal with them. He started for the Pirates in Opening Day 2018. In December 2018, Nova was traded by the Pirates to the Chicago White Sox for $500,000 of international signing bonus money. He led the American League with 225 hits and a 4.72 ERA this season.
