Jahlil Obika Okafor or Jahlil Okafor is a basketball professional from America. He was born on December 15th, 1995 and plays for the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA. He played for the Duke national team in his freshman year of college during 2014–15. He was picked as the 3rd overall during the NBA draft under the Philadelphia 76ers. Apart from the Philadelphia 76ers, he has also played for the Brooklyn Nets.

 

Okafor was high in demand prior to high school and was on top of the rankings for recruits across many years. He featured in high school level basketball at Chicago with Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. He won the award for the best player at the national level among the high school players by McDonald's, Parade, and USA Today.

He won the award for MVP at the Under-17 World Cup by FIBA in 2012 where his USA team won the gold medal. He led the school to success at Chicago Public High School League in 2013. He was named an All-American at the junior level in 2013. He earned a selection to the Under-19 Team of USA in the FIBA 2013 World Cup and won the gold medal for the team.

After the senior season, he was recognized as an All-American and became the nation’s best player according to Parade, McDonald, and USA Today. He entered into a contract with Duke alongside Tyus Jones. With Duke, he became the Freshman for the year in the country and the best player of ACC for the year.

He also earned a selection to first-team of All-American Basketball under NCAA for 2015. After succeeding in the championship for Duke during the Men's Division I Tournament of NCAA 2015, He declared for the NBA drafts.

Professional career

Philadelphia 76ers (2015–2017)

2015–16 season

Philadelphia 76ers picked Okafor as the 3rd overall in the NBA Drafts of 2015. He made his debut in July and scored 20 points during their Summer League game. His NBA debut was versus the Boston Celtics in which he scored 26 points and 2 blocks apart from 7 rebounds. In November he registered the first double-double of his career with 15 rebounds and 21 points versus the Chicago Bulls.

 

He faced suspension for two games due to involvement in off-court situations. In the following February, he registered a season-best of 17 rebounds along with 22 points during a victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

He netted a career-best figure of 31 points versus the Dallas Mavericks. He also followed with 26 points versus the Orlando Magic. After a collision with a teammate, he suffered what appeared to be a minor problem. However, after the CT scan, it was revealed to be a meniscus tear and ruled him out for the season.

Brooklyn Nets (2017–2018)

Okafor was sold to the Brooklyn Nets in December 2017 in a player exchange deal. During his debut, he made 10 points from 23 minutes along with 4 rebounds versus the Toronto Raptors. He played only 25 minutes for the 76ers throughout the season. After the season, he became a free agent.

New Orleans Pelicans (2018–present)

Okafor entered a deal with the New Orleans Pelicans in August 2018. He made a season-best tally of 17 points from 13 minutes of game time versus the Milwaukee Bucks. He received more playing minutes as the regular player was injured. He set season-best tallies in continuous games versus the San Antonio Spurs and the Memphis Grizzlies with season-best 20 points and 10 rebounds. He also registered his career-best of 6 blocks versus the Detroit Pistons.
