Kelechi Osemele, born on 24th June 1989 in Houston, is a professional American football player. Playing in the position of an offensive guard, Kelechi played for the New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL) till season 2019.
He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2nd round of 2012 NFL Draft and with whom he won the Super Bowl XLVII.
Kelechi was placed 95th on the National Football League Top 100 Players of the year 2017. In addition, he was named 1st-team All-Pro in 2017.
Kelechi is of Nigerian descent. His first name ‘Kelechi’ implies "Thank God" in the native Igbo language.
Born to Imelda Osemele & Paul Osemele, even though of Nigerian descent, he was born and brought up in Houston. He attended the Langham Creek High School in Houston.
During the senior season, Kelechi played with Iowa State. He played 30 consecutive games and was named an All American & All-Big 12 1st Team.
He was All-Big 12 2nd Team in the year 2009 & a 3 time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll member.
Osemele was drafted by the Ravens in the 2012 NFL draft. He occupied the position of Right Tackle throughout the season until the playoffs where he replaced an injured Jah Reid at the Left Guard.
In addition, Bryant McKinnie was inserted at the left tackle and Michael Oger was moved to the right tackled.
On the 1st of November 2013, Osemele announced that he must undergo surgery on the back. After having played 7 games in 2013, he was placed on the list of injured by the Ravens.
In 2014, Kelchi having made a full recovery went on to play all matches, starting only 2 as a substitute.
On March 10, 2016, Keleche signed a 5-year contract worth USD 60 million with the Raiders. He was selected to play his 1st Pro Bowl at the end of the 2016 season, along with his teammates Rodney Hudson and Donald Penn, who were all offensive linemen.
Kelechi also made an entry to the 1st All-Pro Team 2016. In addition, he was ranked 95th on the 2017 list of NFL Top Players.
On 19th December 2017, Keleche was selected for the 2nd Pro Bowl, along with the teammates Rodney Hudson and Donald Penn for the 2nd year in a row.
As of October 2018, Kelechi became NFL’s 2nd highest-paid left guard(USD11.7 million) behind Andrew Norwell (USD 13.3 million) followed by Buccaneers' Ali Marpet ($10.825 million).
New York Jets
On March 10, 2019, the Raiders reached an agreement to send Kelechi Osemele and a 2019 6th draft pick (originally owned by the Chicago Bears ) to the Jets against a 5th draft pick. The trade was formalized on 14th 2019.
On 15th October 2019, Kelechi suffered an injury on shoulder and was recommended surgery by the doctors.
However, the New York Jets did not approve of his surgery and was consequently fined for all the practices that he missed because of the injury.
Jets officially released him on 26th October 2019, after he underwent shoulder surgery. He works as a free agent now.
