Lauri Elias Markkanen was born on 22nd May 1997 in Jyvaskyla, Finland. He currently plays as a basketball player signed with NBA team Chicago Bulls in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Career in Finland

He started out his basketball career playing for HoNsU, his city’s local team. He then moved to the second-tier league of Finland, playing for HBA-Marsky from 2014 until 2016, when he moved to the USA to pursue a professional basketball career.


College Career

On the 17th of October 2015, Markkanen agreed to a verbal contract with the Arizona Wildcats to play for them in the 2016 – 17 season. This verbal contract was finalized when he wrote a letter of intent to the Wildcats on the 11th of November 2015. Thus, he then moved to the USA to play for the Wildcats.

He marked his debut with the Wildcats, with Jersey No. 10, and was the first player to wear this number after Mike Bibby. In his first month with the Wildcats, he was nominated as the Player of the Week by Pac-12 and the National Player of the Week by Oscar Robertson. With stats so strong in a debut month, he ensured that critics noticed his skill for the game, with many claiming that he was a strong contender for the upcoming NBA Draft.

 It was also within this month that, he recorded a career-high score of 30 points against their local rivals, Arizona State. He scored a total of 13 rebounds in one match 3 times in total, against Northern Colorado, Washington State, and Washington respectively. When the 2016-17 season ended, Markkanen was named in the third All-American team of NBC Sports as well as USA Today.

He was also nominated for quite a few prestigious awards for the season, such as Karl Malone Award, Wooden Award, and Naismith Award. Markkanen with just one season of collegiate basketball ensured that his name was known in the American Basketball World.

At the end of 2016 – 17, Markkanen decided to opt-out of the 3 years he had left for his collegiate eligibility. He went on to sign himself up for the 2017 NBA draft.

Professional Career

Markkanen was selected in the first round of NBA 2017 draft as the 7th overall pick and was initially drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, on the final night of drafts, his rights were sold to the Chicago Bulls as part of an exchange trade for Jimmy Butler.

Markkanen made his NBA debut for the Chicago Bulls on October, 19th 2017 versus the raptors, and scored a total of seventeen points. Then, on his second game of the season on October 24th, he set a new NBA record for the most number of 3-pointers in a player’s first 3 games in the history of NBA. He was able to score ten 3-pointers, helping his team win the match by a huge margin.
