Lionel Andrés Messi was born on the 24th of June, 1987 in Rosario, Argentina. Considered one of the greatest footballers, he grew up in a very humble environment. His father worked as a manager in a steel factory and his mother was hired as a cleaner. He has three siblings, two elder brothers, and a younger sister.

Growing up, Messi had a knack for playing football. He started playing at a very young age, in a club being coached by his father.

 
When Messi was eleven, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. Coming from a very humble background, his father could not afford to pay for his whole treatment. Local clubs did not offer much help as well in spite of being very talented.

This was when Charly Rexach who was the sporting director of Barcelona FC, recognized his talent and offered him a contract with Barcelona’s Youth Academy. The club offered to pay for his treatment but this required him to move to Barcelona.

 
Football Career:

He started playing for Barcelona’s under 14 teams when he was 13 years old. He struggled a little with adapting to the new environment. A few problems arose during his first year but he got enrolled in the Royal Spanish Football Federation after a year of playing. He scored a total of 36 goals in 30 games for the team.

He completed his growth hormone treatment when he was 14. His first goal was on May 1st, 2005, being the youngest player to score in a La Liga game.

He got his Spanish citizenship the same year in the month of September. This made it possible for him to officially enter the Champion’s League. He played alongside football player Ronaldinho, who also had a lot of praise for the young player. Even though he played as a substitute that year, he managed to strike 6 goals for the team.

Messi has been considered one of the greatest footballers of all time. His achievements are plenty, winning the title for Golden Ball 5 times in the World Cup. He also won a record of 6 European Golden Shoes. He has won 4 UEFA Champions League for Barcelona and 6 Copas del Ray. He scored 438 goals, setting a record for most goals scored in La Liga. In his entire career, he scored a total of over 700 goals for both Barcelona and Argentina.

Messi has a close relationship with all his immediate family. He is particularly close to his mother and has a tattoo of her face on his chest. His father has been his agent since he was 14 and has helped him in handling all his career decisions.
He and his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo have three children together, Thiago, Mateo and Ciro Messi Roccuzzo.

Tax Fraud:


In July of 2016, Messi and his father were found guilty of tax fraud. He was sentenced to 21 months in prison, however, the sentence was reduced to a fine of 2 million euros.


Philanthropy:


Messi has been a part of involved in many charitable organizations. He was the Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. He also has his own charitable organization called the Leo Messi Foundation, which provides support to children in terms of health care, education, and sports. He has contributed and invested a lot, especially to the youth.
