Michael Schumacher was born on 3rd January 1969, in Hürth, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. His father ran the local kart track and it was here that Michael’s passion and obsession for racing began at the age of 4.

Michael quickly mastered kart racing and by the age of 14, he had won the German Junior Kart Championship. By 1987 Michael had left school and started working as a mechanic to support himself while simultaneously working towards his dream of becoming a race driver.

Following an astonishing debut, Michael was immediately signed up by Benneton in 1992 and he proved his worth by winning his 1st F1 race. Michael went on to win a total of 18 races and 2 championships with Benneton over 4 seasons before he moved to Ferrari in 1996.

When Michael joined Ferrari, the team as in a disarray and was without a champion for over 15 years. The next 3 years proved to be very promising were in 1998, Michael went on to finish at 2nd overall in F1.

 
Post recovering from a broken leg injury, Michael began his trail-blazing journey in 2000 where he became Ferrari’s 1st champion in 21 years. From here, Michael created his dominance for 4 consecutive years by winning the F1 championship and creating a world record of 7 Formula One championship titles.

In 2006, after winning only 1 competition throughout 2005, Michael decided to retire from active racing and joined the Ferrari team as an advisor.

The retirement was short-lived and in 2010, after a break of 3 years, Michael made a comeback to F1 with Mercedes team at the age of 41. During this 3-year comeback, Michael could finish on the podium only once and in 2012, after the Brazilian Grand Prix, Michael announced his permanent retirement from the world of F1.

Throughout his entire career, and specifically during his time with Ferrari, Michael worked very closely with the engineering team giving critical feedbacks and inputs for the race car, thus helping the team to become Constructors’ Champions for six consecutive years.

In his personal life as well, with his wife Corinna, the Schumachers made sure that they had a very private and normal life with their 2 children. His daughter Gina-Marie and son Mick, who notably is also a race car driver and is associated with the Ferrari Driver Academy.


In a cruel turn of events, on 29th December 2013, Michael met with a tragic skiing accident suffering from a severe head injury. This accident has resulted in paralysis and memory loss and Michael had to be subjected to medically induced coma. As per the latest update on his medical condition, Michael is still undergoing treatment and rehabilitation at his home in Switzerland.


Michael had extraordinary talent, passion, dedication, determination and ambition which enabled him to constantly reinforce his dominance in formula one for the longest time running. What set him apart was his quest to constantly improve to forever become the greatest driver in the world of F1.
