Dutch and American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter Rutger Hauer was born on January 23, 1944, in Breukelen, the Netherlands. The Hauer family had acting in their genes: Father Arend taught theater skills at the College of Theater, mother Tenke taught courses in drama. Parents often went on tour, so Rutger and his three sisters stayed with a nanny in Amsterdam. Little Rutger made his debut on the stage at the age of 5.


Hauer grew up as a naughty child. At 15, he ran away from home and joined the Dutch merchant navy, and spent almost a year traveling to different countries including Pakistan, Canada, Singapore, Saigon. Returning home, Rutger began to attend evening school and work. At 18, he entered the Theater Institute in Basel (Switzerland). Two years later, he served in the landing forces, after which he entered the acting school in Amsterdam. Then he got a seat at the Royal Theater.

He died this year (2019) on the 19th of July at the age of 75.

The first film work of Hauer was an episodic role in the film "Mr. Havarden" (1968). The following year, the actor got a major role in the historical television series Floris, directed by Paul Verhoeven. From this moment began the long-term cooperation of Verhoeven and Hauer. The director directed the actor in five films of various genres: the erotic drama “Turkish Delights” (1973), the drama “Kitty-Wobbly” (1975), the military epic “Orange Soldier” (1977), and the historical drama “Flesh and Blood” (1985).

Since 1981, Hauer began acting in Hollywood projects. The first American film with the participation of the artist was the tape "Night Hawks" (1981), where the first violin was played by Sylvester Stallone. Success came to Hower after the role of replicant Roy Battie in the science fiction film Blade Runner (1982) by Ridley Scott. In 1985, the actor played another memorable role - Etienne of Navarre in the fantasy adventure film Lady Hawk.


In 1987, Hower was able to play another historical character. His hero was Alexander Pechersky - Russian, who led the uprising in the Sobibor concentration camp.

In the 1990s, Hauer began to actively collaborate with independent filmmakers and companies. The actor received the main roles in the films “Just Seconds” (1992), “Soldier of the Apocalypse” (1997), “Hemoglobin” (1997), “Vaterland” (1994). Rutger appeared in a cameo role in the cult film “Knocking on Heaven” (1998). Actively starring in the series: Hauer can be seen in the projects "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Merlin", "Tenth Kingdom".

In 2000, Hauer made his directorial debut with the short film The Room.

Rutger was an active environmentalist and was a supporter of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. In order to bring awareness about AIDS, Rutger established an organization named Rutger Hauer Starfish Association. He also wrote his autobiography in the year 2007.

The actor married twice. The first marriage was to Heidi Merz and he had his only child Aysha Hauer from this wedlock.. The second wife of Hauer was actress Ineke Ten Kate to whom he got married in the year 1985.


For his role in the film “Escape from Sobibor”, the actor was awarded the Golden Globe Award. Dutch public named him as the Best Dutch Actor of the Century.
