There isn’t a single person in the corporate world that hasn’t faced tough times at work. Sooner or later, you’ll be a victim to tough times. This makes it essential to have the right corporate survival skills or work survival skills in order to help you coast through those tight times.

Tips to keeping your cool as well as your job in tight times

It’s never easy to stay focused during tight times. Following the tips below will help you keep your cool.

Do something different to make the job work – Think about what you could be doing differently to make your job work. Maybe you could ask for a shift change or transfer? Think about a difference that you could make which would convince you to stay and work from there.

Be on time – Half the battle at work is being on time. You’ll score major brownie points with your employer if you show up to work on time, don’t exceed your lunch break, don’t use much sick leave and leave when you’re supposed to instead of early. All of this is easier said than done. If you do mess up, do not make excuses. Instead, ask if you could stay later to make up for the lost time. If the matter is serious enough, your employer should sympathize with your situation.


Schedule your day – If there’s an issue in your personal life which is making it hard to focus at work, take some time out to schedule the next day. Following your schedule will make it very easy to focus because you know what needs to be done as well as when. It will also give you very little time to focus on the negative parts of your personal life which might be trying to sabotage your career.

Remember to find a balance between productivity and idleness. Don’t overload yourself with work as that will leave you stressed as well as overwhelmed. In the same vein, don’t schedule too few tasks as that will give you time to focus on the negative parts of your personal life. Plan a full day while leaving room for breaks as well as expected interruptions.


Reward yourself after work – If times are tough and you find that you dread the thought of returning home, make an effort to reward yourself after work. Schedule something fun for after work. You could schedule a hike, a movie, go out for drinks with friends, go for a fun workout and so on. Do something that makes you happy. Having something to fun to look forward to will make a tough situation less daunting.

Separate social media and work – People often need an outlet when they’re going through tough times. Keeping everything to yourself isn’t healthy. However, there’s a time and place for everything. If you’re discontent with your job, don’t post about it on social media. Posting about your work life on social media risks the wrong person seeing it. Many people have lost their jobs because they decided to post negative posts about their company.

If your work skills or corporate skills need polishing, ask someone higher up in the company’s ladder for help. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it shows people that you’re looking and willing to improve. The skills you learn at work aren’t irrelevant. You can use them in other parts of your life or even in another job. If your job doesn’t work out, don’t worry about it. It isn’t the end of the world. Take the lessons you’ve learned and apply them to all aspects of your life.
