The United States was once known as “the land of opportunity,” but this isn’t so in all parts of the land. Though there are a plethora of amazing cities in the United States, there also exists a large number of cities where the crime rate statistics show a lot of opportunities; not for regular working-class people, but criminals. For a family migrating to a new city in the United States, the crime rate would be a life-changing aspect, as it will determine the kind of lifestyle you will be exposed to on a daily basis.

Cities with the highest crime rate in America

There are numerous cities with extremely high crime rates, some more so than others. Here are cities in America with the highest crime rate:

1. Anchorage, Alaska – Each year the state draws-in a myriad of tourists, and along with it; a dangerously high crime rate. Being the largest state in the country, 3rd least populous and the sparsely scattered population are contributing factors as to why the crime rate here is so high; the appropriate authorities are unable to get to a crime scene in-time, often unable to solve the particular crime. The city ranked 16th regarding violent crimes in 2017, with 1,203 per 100,000 residents, and 25th regarding property crimes, with 5,415 per 100,000 residents.

2. Baltimore, Maryland – ranked 3rd concerning violent crime, with 2,027 incidents per 100,000 inhabitants, Baltimore does not joke around regarding its crime rate. In the year 2017, the city reported 342 homicides, almost one every single day.

3. Pueblo, Colorado – Contrary to popular belief; some Colorado cities report an extensive amount of criminal activity. Claiming the 8th rank concerning property crime, Pueblo reports 6,167 incidents per 100,000 residents, also reporting 1,052 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

4. Chattanooga, Tennessee – one of the lesser known cities in Tennessee. Chattanooga is one of the worst cities regarding property crime, reporting 5,985 incidents per 100,000 residents. In 2017, the homicide rate was at its highest, reported at 31 incidents. Violent crime here has also seen an increase from 2016 at 1,023 per 100,000 residents to 1,066 incidents per 100,000 residents.

5. Oakland, California – Oakland has seen a steady decline in the crime rate since 2012, the crime here was at its highest during the recession. Although, it still isn't anywhere near crime-free. In 2017 the violent crime here was 1,299 incidents per 100,000 residents along with 69 homicides, ranking 10th regarding violent crime and 15th regarding property crime.

6. Albuquerque, New Mexico – considered the 11th most violent city in the country, reporting 1,112 incidents of violent crime in 2016, and 2017 only saw a 23 increase in these numbers, reporting 1,369 incidents per 100,000 residents. It Is also ranked the 3rd most dangerous city concerning property crimes, not an ideal place to own a home now, is it?

7. Kansas, Missouri – the city is the 5th more dangerous city in the country, with 1,654 incidents of violent crime per 100,000 people. The homicide rate is the highlight of this city, standing at a whopping 23.5 murders per 100,000 people.

8. Louis, Missouri – taking the title of "most dangerous city in America." You can find St. Louis on the number one spot on many crime-related lists. It witnessed 91.5 violent crimes per 100,000 residents and 205 homicides in the same year. St. Louis also has a murder rate of 67 per 100,000 residents, the murder count in 2017 was reported at 2,082 per 100,000 residents which is the highest in any major US city.
