What are the Requirements for Becoming a Police Officer in South Carolina?
Do you want to become a police officer? Well, you can try to become one in South Carolina because of the excellent structure of law enforcement that is present in the state. There are more than 11,000 men and women in South Carolina who work as patrol officers. But the South Carolina Department of Public Safety will take only those who meet will all the requirements for the post that are listed below.
There are certain minimum employment requirements that every person applying to be a police officer in South Carolina must meet –

- A high school diploma or equivalent
- A valid driver’s license of South Carolina
- No record of serious misdemeanors or felony convictions

Submit the Employment Application
Once you have checked that you meet the basic requirements, your next step would be to download the Application for Employment, fill it and then submit it. You will also have to attach certain documents with the application like –
- Your Social Security Card
- Your Driver’s license of South Carolina
- GED or High School Diploma
- If applicable then Military form DD-214
- Your driving record for the past decade
- National Credit Bureau Credit Report
Complete the Physical Agility Test
There is a Physical Agility Test or PAT that every applicant has to pass in order to become a police officer in South Carolina. This test will judge your strength and endurance and you have to cross the obstacles within a time phase of 2:06 in order to qualify.
Complete a Reading Test
Once you have passed the PAT, you will have to give the Reading Test in which your criminal record and all your documents are checked for transparency. If everything is found okay, then you will have to sit for the Nelson-Denny Testing. If you have a Bachelor’s Degree, then this test can be skipped.
Pass the Initial Background Interview
If you pass the written test, an Initial Background Interview will be conducted. In this interview, you will have to give a personal history statement and you will also have to complete a questionnaire that is specifically designed for the pre-employment stage.
Pass the Background Investigation
An experienced investigator will be checking your background thoroughly and you will also have to give your fingerprints and stand for photographs.
Pass a Formal Interview
If you pass the background investigation, an interview will be conducted by the Chief of Police and his commanders. You have to pass this Formal Interview in order to be finally considered for the role of a police officer in South Carolina.
Pass the Remaining Employment Testing
When you pass the Formal Interview, a conditional offer of employment will be issued to you. If you receive that, then there are some more tests that you have to give. These basically include a health screening, a drug or alcohol screening, a polygraph examination, and a complete health checkup.
Complete the Police Training Program
Lastly, there is a Police Training Program that all new recruits have to pass. There are several elements in this program which are the Basic Candidate School, South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Basic Law Enforcement School and also a field training program conducted by the specific department of South Carolina you want to be in.
