What are the Requirements for Becoming a Police Officer in Texas?

Police departments all over the world offer some of the most challenging jobs to young aspirants. However, becoming a police officer requires a lot of hard work. The state of Texas has a number of openings for aspiring young people.

Commission Rule 215.15 specifies some minimum enrolment requirements for training as a Texas Police Officer. These requirements are elucidated below:

  • Age

All the candidates who want to enroll as a police officer need to be 21 years or older. The age requirement is relaxed to 18 years if the candidate has an associate degree or credits equalling 60 hours from an accredited college or university.

  • Citizenship

All the applicants should have American citizenship. Applicants whose citizenship applications are pending before the government is not eligible to apply.

  • Clean Criminal Record

A clean criminal record is one of the most important requirements for becoming a police officer in Texas. Applicants should have no serious criminal record.

Some of the issues that would lead to the disqualification of an applicant are:

  • Convictions in family violence offenses
  • Convictions in class B or higher level misdemeanors
  • Prohibitions at the state or federal level to operate a motor vehicle
  • Prohibitions at the state or federal level from using firearms and ammunition

Candidates are required to submit a statement of their personal history along with the application form. All the information regarding the criminal record of the applicants will be cross-referenced with the records of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

  • Driver’s License

All the aspiring applicants should have a valid Texas driver’s license. The driver’s license should be of Class ‘C’ status.

  • Drug Dependency

Applicants should not have any history of drug dependency. Due to this requirement, applicants with mental health problems are generally disqualified from applying to the Texas policy force unless they are completely cured. During the recruitment process, a blood and urine test is conducted on all the applicants to make sure that they do not have any traces of prescription or illegal drugs.

  • High School Diploma

The minimum educational qualification to apply for the Texas police force is a high school diploma.

  • Medical and Physical Condition

At the time of applying for the post of a Texas police officer, the medical and physical conditions of the applicants should be good. Any present or past health issues should not come in the way of the discharge of their duties as a police officer.

  • Passing the Written Examination

All the aspiring applicants should take a written test and pass it successfully. Written tests check the reading, comprehension, and problem-solving skills of the applicants.

  • Clearing Psychological Assessment

Aspirants to the Texas police force should be mentally tough. A psychological assessment of the aspirants will be conducted in which the personality traits, mental wellbeing, emotional control, and temperament of the candidates are assessed. The psychological assessment will also check whether an aspirant can cope with mental stress and perform the responsibilities of a police officer.

  • General Physical Check-up

Applicants to Texas police force should clear a general physical check-up. In the physical examination, the number of push-ups and sit-ups that could be completed by the applicants will be counted. In addition, all the candidates should also complete a 1.5 mile run in the stipulated time. All the key organs of people like heart and lungs should be in good condition. The vision of the candidates should be good without colorblindness. Hearing capabilities of the applicants should also be good.
