5 Worst Crimes in US History

We have come a long way since the beginning of the human civilization and yet there are countless crimes in our history where the sheer magnitude of the emotion that triggered the act made us question the whole point of our evolution as the most sophisticated being of our ecosystem. Regardless of whether they were driven by passion, envy, anger, greed or revenge, these heinous crimes have gone down in the US history as some of the most notorious acts that literally shook the entire generation with strong feelings of fear and utter despise for what the human mind is capable of.

The Lincoln Assassination

Right after his second inauguration, President Abraham Lincoln had gone to watch a popular comedy play at the Ford 's Theatre on April 15, 1865, when an actor by the name of John Wilkes Booth shot him point blank in his head from behind with a .44 Caliber. As a member of the anti-Union Knights of the Golden Circle, John did not agree with Lincoln’s policies against slavery and went down in the US history as the killer of the greatest Presidents of all time.

The Black Dahlia

One of the darkest crimes of its kind, the Black Dahlia murder case still makes one shiver with its gruesome details and the magnitude of human insanity involved. Back in 1947, one Betty Bersinger discovered the body of Elizabeth Short that had been divided in half in the Leimert Park in Los Angeles. Later referred to as the Black Dahlia by the local media, Short had her head bashed in, her body parts mutilated and sliced in half by her murderer. The ghastly murder still remains unsolved to this day.

The 9/11

Another crime that literally shook the foundation of the entire western world with its sheer audacity and magnitude was the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center Twin Towers and the Pentagon. With three hijacked planes crashing into the respective buildings, there were nearly 2996 death casualties, with 6000 others being injured and over 18,000 others developing severe health issues in the wake of the terrorist attack. After nearly two decades, the tragedy still remains as a fresh wound in the minds of the Americans that lived to witness its aftermath.

The Manson Family

A quasi-commune, Charles Manson was the leader of the Manson Family that he formed in the late 60s. Manson believed that there was going to be an apocalyptic race war in the near future and that another tragedy was required to stop it from happening. Consequently, Manson devised a series of horrific murders including that of the famous actress Sharon Tate for several consecutive nights. He was later convicted with multiple back-to-back life sentences.
