Hate crimes are crimes against humanity. Another name for a hate crime is a bias-motivated crime. Criminal acts of violence that are directed at people for reasons related to race, sex, color, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and so on are classified as hate crimes.

Violence against victims of hate crimes ranges from physical assault to verbal insults, property damage, harassment, and even murder. Perpetrators of hate crimes often resort to bullying in an attempt to intimidate and emotionally hurt the victim. According to the FBI, a total of 6,121 hate crimes were committed in the year 2016 in the United States.

Here are ten of the worst hate crimes to have occurred in the past couple of years:


India Clarke: In July 2015, India Clarke, an African American who identified as a transgender woman was brutally beaten and killed in Tampa, Florida.

Pulse Night Club: In one of the worst massacres against the LGBTQ community, 49 people were shot dead and another 58 injured during a shooting at the Pulse night Club in Orlando, Florida on 12th June 2016.


Rae’Lynn Thomas: The 28-year-old trans woman was beaten and shot to death by her mother’s ex-boyfriend in Ohio, Texas in August 2016.

Danielle Smith and Teresa Jackson: Danielle Smith, a transgender woman and her mother Teresa Jackson were strangled and stabbed by their neighbor before he burnt their house down.

Steven Nelson: 49-year-old Steven Nelson was beaten, stripped, and robbed by a group of assailants at Lake Lowell in January 2017. The gay man died a few hours later.

Texas Mosque Burning: Also in January this year, an Islamic center in Lake Travis and another in Victoria, Texas were burned to the ground in an attack against the Muslim community.


Srinivas Kuchibhotla: Adam Purinton shot and killed Srinivas Kuchibhotla after directing racial slurs at him and his companion for being brown-skinned. The incident took place in a bar in Olathe, Kansas in February 2017.

Ricky John Best and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche: The two men were stabbed and killed when they intervened to protect two women from a verbal racial attack. The women were the target of racial slurs on a train in Portland, Oregon where the incident took place in May 2017.

Ally Steinfeld: The seventeen-year-old from Missouri was stabbed, mutilated, and burned for revealing that she was transgender, in September 2017.

 Candace Towns: In October 2017, Candace Towns was shot in the side of her face for being a transgender woman. The crime took place in Bibb County, Georgia.
