How to Find a New Career

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

Finding a job that you are absolutely passionate about is a blessing. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky to find a job they really enjoy doing. Instead of settling for a dead-end job that makes you unhappy, why not take matters into your own hands and make a career change?

Here we’ve listed out the steps you need to take in order to make a successful career change:

  • Conduct a self-SWOT

SWOT stands for Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats. Conducting a self-SWOT will help you understand what your strengths and weaknesses are and what careers you may be good at.

To conduct a self-SWOT, take a sheet of paper and make 4 columns. Each column represents one aspect of the SWOT. Under each column, make a list of your strengths/weakness and opportunities/threats respectively. Once you start writing, you’ll have a clearer understanding of your own capabilities.

  • Research alternative career options

The most important task is to research about the type of jobs available in the job market. Speak to your loved ones, look things up online, visit a career center and talk to the professionals. By tapping into all these sources, you’ll learn about new careers that you didn’t even know existed. You can now take an informed decision.

  • Identify the type of environment you like to work in

Not everyone likes working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Some prefer to work in slow-paced environments that don’t involve too much manager involvement. You’ll need to analyze what type of environment you like to work in. Your self-SWOT will help here.

You could also analyze your previous work performance. Did you enjoy the environment you were working in previously? If yes, stick to it. If not, change.

  • Visit an aptitude center

An aptitude center is the best place to learn more about yourself. Aptitude centers administer various career-personality tests which help them identify what your career-personality is. These tests will help you narrow down the areas where you may be extremely successful professionally.

  • Be open to internships and part-time opportunities

The chances of getting a full-time job in an industry you’ve never worked in are pretty slim. Be open to all types of jobs that come your way. Whether it’s an internship or a contract job or a part-time opportunity; be willing to get the required work experience. Once you have this experience by your side, transitioning to a full-time job will be extremely easy.
