Greenville County Detention Center
There are three unique facilities that make up the Adult Detention Center. All three of these facilities house adult offenders. These facilities are made and run based on the standards which are set by the South Carolina Department of Corrections. The official capacity of all of the facilities is 1,277. There are many services provided such as housing, mental health services, laundry, food service, medical, dental, welfare and so on.
When the old Broad Street jail was closed, the detention center was moved to McGee Street. A new Law Enforcement Center was also constructed in 1976. The original facility which is better known as the “old jail” or “Building Two” initially could hold 203 inmates. It also had a food service area, facilities for laundry as well as administrative areas. The capacity has expanded after many renovations and upgrades. It is now mainly used to house inmates and has an official capacity of 511.
In 1994, another facility was constructed next to the first facility. It is known as the “new jail” or “Building One”. Initially, it had a capacity of 288. It also has a food service area, laundry facilities, release and intake area, medical facilities, administrative offices and so on. It also has designated housing areas for inmates who suffer from medical and mental health issues. The facility has received a couple of renovations and can now officially hold 318 inmates.
2007 saw the construction of another facility. It is commonly referred to as “Building Four” and has an official rated capacity of 448. It has inmate housing areas as well as different spaces which are used for different support services.
Greenville County Detention Center Mail
Inmates are permitted to receive mail through the U.S. Mail. Safety and security issues have made it a necessity to scan the mail with the help of Smart Communications. Personal inmate mail is scanned at an offsite location by a vendor supported electronic system. The mail can then be viewed by inmates at the housing unit kiosks through their individual accounts.
Photographs are not accepted through postal mail. The only acceptable types of mail include postcards, letters, and greeting cards. Legal mail is opened in the presence of the inmate and checked for contraband before the inmate receives the mail. Newspapers, magazines and paperback books aren't allowed with various different illegal material. There is a strict rule of hardcover books not being allowed.
Outgoing mail isn’t censored or inspected before the mail is transferred to the U.S. Postal Service.
