Spartanburg County was formed in 1785 by an act of the legislature of South Carolina out of the Ninety-six district. On the third Monday in June of 1785, Mr. William Young was elected as the first Sheriff of Spartanburg County.

The Detention Services Division is a branch of the Sheriff’s Office who is charged with the duty of protecting the public. As of 1st May 2015, the only acceptable form of incoming and outgoing personal correspondence will be in the form of a postcard. Postcards can be either plain or pictured. Personal incoming letters will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender. All pictures must be in the form of a postcard. Pictures will not be permitted to be dropped off at the facility or mailed to the facility for any inmate.

All incoming mail must be in rectangular postcard form. The only exception to this rule is privileged mail. Postcards can only be at least 3.5 x 5 as well as no larger than 4.25 x 6 and must be written in blue or black ink. A return name and address must be clearly marked on the postcard. The reason for all of these rules is to ensure the safety as well as the security of all jail inmates, facilities and staff.
