Spartanburg County was formed in 1785 by an act of the legislature of South Carolina out of the Ninety-six district. On the third Monday in June of 1785, Mr. William Young was elected as the first Sheriff of Spartanburg County.

The Detention Services Division is a branch of the Sheriff’s Office who is charged with the duty of protecting the public. The Spartanburg County Detention Center does this by securely detaining individuals who have been arrested and accused of committing different offenses against the citizens of Spartanburg County.

The main goal that the detention center aspires to is to provide a secure, safe and sanitary place of pre-trial incarceration in the most cost-effective and efficient way possible. Spartanburg County Jail Mail

As of 1st May 2015, the only acceptable form of incoming and outgoing personal correspondence will be in the form of a postcard. Postcards can be either plain or pictured. Personal incoming letters will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender. All pictures must be in the form of a postcard. Pictures will not be permitted to be dropped off at the facility or mailed to the facility for any inmate.

All incoming mail must be in rectangular postcard form. The only exception to this rule is privileged mail. Postcards can only be at least 3.5 x 5 as well as no larger than 4.25 x 6 and must be written in blue or black ink. A return name and address must be clearly marked on the postcard. The reason for all of these rules is to ensure the safety as well as the security of all jail inmates, facilities and staff.

The U.S Postal Money Orders will only be received by mail. If letters or photographs are found in the envelope, all of the contents will be returned to the sender. It is important that you write the inmates’ name and inmate number on the Money Order.
