How Marriage Records are maintained in Wyoming?
In the state of Wyoming, the Wyoming Department of Health, Vital Statistics Services maintains records for all marriages that occurred within the state from May 1941. To obtain a record for a marriage that occurred before May 1941, visit the Wyoming State Archives.
Obtaining Certified Marriage Records
The Wyoming Public Records Act enables the public to retrieve public records such as marriage and divorce records.
The Wyoming Department of Health is the only government body that is able to provide copies of marriage records. If the marriage did not occur in Wyoming, a record will not be issued. This service is subject to fees and requires the submission of certain documents.
To obtain a marriage record for an event that occurred prior to May 1941, visit the county clerk’s office where the original license was issued. Records that are older than 50 years can be obtained from the Wyoming State Archives Office.
Who can Obtain a Marriage Record?
Only the people named on the marriage certificate or a lawyer acting on their behalf can obtain a marriage record.
What Information is Required?
You will need to provide the following details:
- Full names of the couple, i.e. husband, wife, partner, including their previous surname.
- Date of the marriage event
- Signature of the applicant or the spouse listed on the marriage certificate
- Your mailing address where the record should be mailed
- Photocopy of a government ID such as a Driver’s License, Passport, etc.
What are the Fees?
The fee for a marriage record is $20. If the record is irretrievable, the fee will be retained as a search fee.
What Payment Options are Available?
You can pay the fee via a personalized bank check or money order payable to the Vital Statistics Services. You must enclose a self-addressed envelope with postage along with your request.
Checks are only acceptable if the name on the check is the same as the person who is requesting the record and if he or she is legally entitled to the marriage record. Non-personalized or third party checks will not be accepted.
If you prefer to have your marriage record sent via UPS, FedEx or US Postal Express, then please include the appropriate pre-paid label with your request.
Cash payments will not be accepted by the department.
How Long will it take for a Record to be Processed?
It may take up to five business days for a marriage record to be retrieved and processed.
