How to Register Vote in North Carolina?

In the United States of America, elections are held at the federal, state and local levels for choosing government officials. While the parameters for the election of federal officials are laid down by the United States Constitution, the state law regulates the rules and processes of the polls in the U.S., which includes the eligibility of voters and the running of state and local elections.   • The person must be a citizen of the United States

  • To register to vote in North Carolina, a person must meet the legal qualifications mentioned above.
  • The person needs to download the form found on the official website of North Carolina State Board of Elections- https://www.ncsbe.gov/voters/registering-to-vote to register to vote or update their address, name or party affiliation.
  • The applicant must sign the application in pen to paper since electronic signatures are not entertained.
  • After signing the form, the application should be mailed to the local board of elections office in the nation of residence of the applicant. One can find the address on the same site mentioned above.
 

It must be noted here that apart from downloading the form from the website mentioned above address, voter registration applications are also available at other locations like the NC State Board of Elections, public libraries, County Boards of  Elections and public high schools and college admission offices.

What happens after mailing the application?

If the application is fulfilled and meets all requirements, then the county board of elections will mail the applicant a voter registration card which will provide the notice of the registration. The mailing is done to verify the applicant's address, and it is non-forwardable. In the rare case of the voter card being returned as undeliverable,  a second mailing is done to the voter. If the second mailing is also returned as undeliverable, then the applicant’s voter registration will be denied.

Voter registration applicants should expect to receive their voter card within 14 days if everything is appropriately followed. If applicants do not receive their voter cards within two weeks, they should immediately contact their county board of elections office.

The deadline in North Carolina to register to vote is 25 days before the date of an election. If the applicant misses the voter registration deadline, the applicant can still register by going in person during early voting until three days before Election Day. By mail,  the voter card should be marked 25 days before the date of the election and be received 20 days before the date of the election.
