The Chief of Police is the head of the Bakersfield police department. The Chief has an Assistant Chief to help in all his responsibilities. The Captain is responsible for individual divisions. The Captain is assisted by the Lieutenant. Others in the hierarchy include the Sergeant, Detective, Senior Officer, and Officer.

For all operational purposes, the city is divided into two areas that are in turn divided into six zones. There are individual stations. There are two stations and a sub-station that work under the headquarters and help in law enforcement.
