The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department or CMPD is located in the city of Charlotte, North Carolina. It was formed with the goal of making the city of Charlotte one of the safest cities to live in America. The organization was formed more than 24 years ago and has a vibrant history dating back more than 100 years.

CMPD was founded in 1993. Prior to this, it existed as a separate entity, namely Charlotte Police and Mecklenburg County PD. Today the city of Charlotte Police Department is one of the biggest police departments between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, GA.

Ker Putney is the Chief of Police of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. He assumed his current post on June 29, 2015. He started working for the CMPD in 1992. During his tenure, he has taken on many responsibilities such as patrol, specialized assignments at different ranks in the organization and training. Chief Putney received a promotion to Deputy Chief in 2007.
