Caledonia Correctional Institution Profile and Valuable Information
Caledonia Correctional Institution history
A medium/minimum-security correctional facility in the state of North Carolina in the United State of America, Caledonia Correctional Institute has the distinction of being the state’s oldest prison. It was set up way back in 1892 and is situated in Halifax County on a massive property.
The correctional facility is primarily for male offenders who have been penalized with a life sentence by the court. Historically, the inmates of this prison worked on one of the chain gangs or in a workshop. The facility initially comprised some camps outside and the main prison building. There was a time when the prisoners had to go across Sampson County and slog for long hours on railway tracks.
Originally, the main building of Caledonia housed women, as well as, men offenders. However, today all the dormitories in this correctional facility only house adult male prisoners.
Some additional cells were constructed in this prison in 1976. These cells house the adult male prisoners at present. Caledonia Correctional Institute, North Carolina also has separate buildings today for recreation, as well as, vocational classes.
