The Calipatria prison is a male only prison located in the limits of Calipatria city. It is around 3 miles from the center of the city. Located 184 feet below sea level, the prison is considered as the lowest prison in the entire Western hemisphere.
The prison is spread over 1227 acres. The capacity of the prison is 2,308. Out of this, 2000 units are high security in nature. The remaining are open dormitories that do not have a perimeter and are meant for minimum security inmates.
The prison is functioning at over-capacity with 3,546 inmates housed in the prison as on March 2019.
