The capacity of the Chowchilla state prison is 2,004. As of March 2019, the prison is running on overcapacity and has 2,861 inmates.

The prison is built on a land of 640 acres. It is opposite to the Valley State Prison. The prison has four Levels all of which are in one building that has 32 rooms. There is a reception center where inmates are housed until they are allocated to another prison.

The Condemned housing unit is the death row that houses women prisoners in California who have been awarded the death sentence.

Visitation Hours

Visitation to any of the prisons in California is governed by common procedures. Visitation is allowed on Saturdays. Sundays, and public holidays. The visitation hours are from 7:30 am / 8:00 am to 2:00 pm / 3:00 pm.
