Colorado State Penitentiary Profile and Valuable Information

Colorado State Penitentiary background and history

The Colorado State Penitentiary (CSP for short) is a level five maximum-security prison in the State of Colorado in the United States of America. It is a part of the State of Colorado's East Canon Complex in Fremont County, along with six other prisons that constitute facilities of different security levels. It has the capacity to house approximately 800 inmates and is managed by the Colorado Department of Corrections. The history of the Colorado State Penitentiary dates back to 1993 when construction started.

Nowadays, the Colorado State Penitentiary holds some of the most deadly, violent and dangerous criminals in the country. It is notoriously known for its Lethal Injection Chamber, but inmates who have been given the death penalty are held at Sterling Correctional Facility today. Prisoners held at the Colorado State Penitentiary were previously held under solitary confinement, represented by living in single cells without contact (or with minimal contact) with anyone else, with the use of stringent security measures. Solitary confinement is officially termed Administrative Segregation or AdSeg.

Inmates were held on a 23-hour lockdown for their entire time of sentencing. In 2012, there was a mandate for the Colorado State Penitentiary to hold a small amount of high-security prisoners. Solitary confinement is no longer allowed in the strictest terms of its use. The Colorado State Penitentiary allows inmates to leave their cells and they are permitted some yard time as well. Data from 2012 showed that the prison housed 984 inmates.

Lately, the facility has become more of a reformative place aimed at modifying and changing inmate behavior for the better. Currently, the Colorado State Penitentiary has inmate programs such as substance abuse treatment for drug and alcohol dependent prisoners. The facility also offers educational/academic programs for attaining adult basic education and GED. A behavior modification program called Thinking for a Change is also conducted.
