Concord State Prison Information
Massachusetts Correctional Institution Concord or MCI Concord State prison opened its doors in 1878. The original Concord State prison was constructed in 1812. It was called New State Prison with General Chamberlain as its first warden. Located in Concord, this multi-security penitentiary holds 1,400 male inmates. It is one of the oldest state prisons in Massachusetts. Concord State prison underwent new construction and extensive renovations in the 1980s and remains in operation till today.
In this particular state prison, there are three housing classification levels for offenders. These range from the general population or C3 to C5 or maximum security. All newly incarcerated male inmates are processed via the Reception and Diagnostic Unit (R&D) although at one time MCI Concord was the primary site for all intakes.
At MCI Concord, there are several programs available for offenders such as violence programs that impart conflict resolution skills. Emotional awareness and healing programs teach inmates how to minimize their disorderly behaviors. Parenting programs impart skills and techniques in how to deal with fatherhood responsibilities. Inmates are encouraged to take self-help programs such as the twelve-step program and substance abuse. MCI Concord’s calligraphy program teaches prisoners the art of calligraphy through commitment and focuses on techniques.
The general public and visitors may contact the prison through the phone, fax or physical address. To get in touch with an inmate, please send a self-addressed envelope with your letter. Please note the contents of your letter may be checked by prison employees.
