Emanuel Women's Facility is a medium-security prison that was established in 1995 in Swainsboro, Georgia. As the name suggests, the facility is only for adult female inmates convicted for felonies. The facility houses 415 medium and minimum security inmates along with level II mental health offenders in open dormitories.
Emanuel Women’s Facility History
Although opened in 1995, Emanuel Women’s Facility was renovated in 2011 and now contains six open dormitories with a capacity of 46 people, one open dorm with a capacity of 124 inmates, and 10 open dorms with a capacity of 16 inmates. In addition to this, there are three separate isolation cells that can house 7 inmates.
Emanuel Women’s Facility is also a host facility for Emanuel Probation Detention Center or PDC, the largest probation detention center under the Department of Corrections of Georgia. PDC has two segregation units with 17 beds in total.
Emanuel Women’s Facility Inmate Programs
Emanuel Women’s Facility offers academic courses like diploma in general education and adult basic education. The facility also offers literacy remedial education and counseling that includes moral recognition therapy and motivation for change classes. Many groups and universities like the Women's Focus Group from Emory University, the University of Georgia, and Georgia Southern University also work with the facility to offer courses to the inmates.
Inmates can also take general recreational courses like ground maintenance, laundry, cosmetology, agriculture, and environmental studies classes, custodial maintenance, baking, cooking, building repair and maintenance, small appliance repair, etc. There are also worship services like bible studies, a choir, dance teams, and pastoral counseling.
Emanuel Women’s Facility Visiting Hours
The facility is shut for visits from Monday to Friday. It is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Guests can likewise visit the office on state holidays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. However, before visiting the facility, you must ensure that you are an approved visitor. You need to fill a visitor application and submit it to the visitation office at least 45 days prior to your visit. The facility conducts a personal investigation on each visitor that typically takes 21 to 45 days to finish. Only after you have been approved can you meet the prisoners.
Emanuel Women’s Facility Mail and Visitation Rules
Visitors over the age of 16 need to produce a valid proof of identity at the entry into the facility. The clothing stipulations for visitors are quite strict. You must make sure to not wear revealing clothes. Both men and women should not wear clothes that reveal their shoulder or midriff.
Visitors must wear undergarments like slips, panties, and bras. Only children below the age of 12 can wear shorts. Women in dresses must not wear something that is more than 2 inches above the knees. Sheer materials are also not permitted for both men and women. Visitors cannot carry food or beverages and electronic items like phones cameras, etc. The only store-bought baby food or baby formula can be carried inside in a bottle. You can also carry your car keys and a maximum of $20 but no caps, hats, or scarves.
