The Fort Dodge Correctional facility history
The FDCF opened in April 1998 with work on it beginning in October 1996. Understanding the importance of public safety the Governor approved the construction of program space and 400 extra beds in order to accommodate more inmates and offer them rehabilitation avenues. This proved to be a success, but considering the influx of inmates that kept increasing, the previously two inmate occupancy cells were converted into three inmate occupancy cells which now can accommodate 1392 inmates at capacity.

The facility offers numerous inmate programs with some of the more prominent ones listed below -
Educational Opportunities - Iowa Central Community College, in association with the FDCF, offers daily classes for special education, basic literacy, life skills, high school equivalency programs and English as a second language (ELS).
Vocational training - Vocational training is available but the courses offered are subject to change depending on the amount of funding available. Courses offered in previous years have included, but not limited to, building trade, baking, culinary skills, supply chain management, building trade as well as welding. Currently, training in the textile program is being offered.
Apprentice Programs - The FDCF is offering an apprenticeship in numerous disciplines such as carpentry, landscaping, housekeeping, plumbing, welding, computer operations, cooking, electric wiring, painting and sewing machine repairing. Additionally, the National Career Readiness Certificate can be availed by the inmates which prove invaluable in successful employment.
Treatment Opportunities - The FDCF offers variously targeted and evidence-based treatment opportunities for the inmates. This includes addressing the inmate's domestic abuse, substance abuse issues. his usually takes the form of offering to enhance the inmate's ability to make decisions, avail employment, improve interpersonal relationships and enhance their own self-care.
