Kulani Correctional Facility, Hawaii is a 200-bed minimum-security prison run by the State oh Hawaii, Department of Public Safety. It is located at a distance of approximately 20 miles southeast of Hilo, Big Island of Hawaii, on the slope of Mauna Loa.
Kulani Correctional Facility, Hawaii or KCF, as it is commonly referred to, strives to have all of its prisoners diligently attend its extracurricular and educational training and programs. Their motive is to prepare the prisoners for furlough and reassimilation with the communities which they came from.
Kulani Correctional Facility Inmate Programs
KCF runs an entire gamut of educational and work programs for its inmates. Besides mandatory treatment programs, other programs here include educational and vocational training classes and GED training.
The Kulani Correctional Facility, Hawaii has partnered with the Hawaii Community College (HCC), Office of Continuing Education & Training (OCET) to offer an Agriculture / Horticulture Program, Facility Maintenance Program, and Hale Mua ‘O Kulani Hawaiian Culture Program. The HCC OCET program also offers Personal Enrichment and Foundation Skills classes. Agriculture and Foundational Skills’ Certificates of Completion can be submitted to the HCC if an inmate wishes to later enroll for courses there, and the associated credits will be applied.
KCF Hawaii Correctional Industries has contracts and agreements with the Department of Public Safety, Hawaii and other state agencies to enable inmates to strengthen their work skills and earn wages while doing so. Interested inmates can consider joining KCF Work lines which provide work opportunities in the janitorial, utility, and food services. The KCF community service working participates in landscape maintenance at the Pana’ewa Zoo multiple times in a month and the KCF conservation working helps DLNR staff with their projects in the Pu’u Maka’ala Natural Area Reserve.
Kulani Correctional Facility History
Not many know, but the Kulani Correctional Facility, Hawaii opened as a work camp back in 1946. Situated on 20 acres of land, the KCF assigned its inmates with agricultural work primarily in the early days. One of the dominant programs here, actually, involved the inmates planting and cutting koa forests.
As time passed, the Kulani Correctional Facility, Hawaii Inmate Programs were updated with the changing technology and needs of the job market. Currently, the programs concentrate more on providing computer, construction, mechanical repair, and maintenance as well as heavy equipment operation training.

Visitation is allowed at the KCF on all weekends and state-recognized holidays between 8 am-9 am and 12 pm-1 pm.
