Mabel Bassett Correctional Center Profile and Valuable Information

The Mabel Bassett Correctional Center (MBCC) is located in Pottawatomie County in Oklahoma. It is an all-women facility that houses 1241 inmates and most of them fall under the medium security level. The facility was named after Mabel Basset who served as the Commission for Charities and Corrections from 1923 to 1947. Apart from the various wings, MBCC is one of the very few facilities that houses women, mental health patients. Additionally, the Segregated Housing Unit is a women’s unit for inmates in Protective Custody or Death Row.

Mabel Bassett Correctional Center Inmate Programs:

Education: Most of the inmates lack basic education. The Mabel Basset Correctional Center offers courses that inmates can take up. The MBCC also offers Pre-High School Equivalency and High School Equivalency diploma programs. While the pre-high school and high school courses are state-funded, MBCC also offers its inmates a college education. However, college course expenses have to be paid by the inmates themselves.

Substance Abuse Treatment: MBCC has a significant drug abuse treatment program. Here inmates are taught effective ways to avoid drugs and alcohol. The program also treats and advises on cognitive, social and emotional skills needed to cope with the addiction problem

CareerTech: The CareerTech Skills Center provides technical training that enables inmates to acquire a skill for re-entry into society. This skill usually holds the inmate in good stead to find employment after their release.

Specialized Units: A 24/7 infirmary that provides comprehensive medical care, monitoring and treatment are available at MBCC. The inmates housed here usually need serious and ongoing medical care. The mental health unit, however, houses people permanently as mental illnesses prevent interaction with the general population.

Agri Services: The Agri Service of the Department of Corrections has one of the biggest farms in the whole of the United States. There are about 11 farms totaling about twenty thousand acres in size. Cattle are reared on these farms. Out of the 20,000 acres, almost 14,000 are pasture land. The rest of the land has incorporated a meat processing center, food processing plant and food warehouses. The terrain differs in most of these farms.

For instance, the land at eastern Oklahoma is covered with trees, while the terrain in western Oklahoma is open range areas and cropland. Thus management of these lands differs according to what the terrain and the climate in respective areas offer. However, the collective goal of maintaining Agri-Services remains the same which is to self-sustain and provide inmates a chance to learn valuable job skills and work ethics.

The Agri -Service Program brings down operational costs in prisons drastically. Food products are procured at a significantly lower cost as compared to prime vendors. The Agri- Services fleet, then transports the produce to all correctional facilities within Oklahoma State. Statistics show that the program saved a little over $1 Million in food costs in the year 2018.

Private Correctional Institutions:

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections enters contracts with private entities or contractors in order to house the ever-burgeoning prison population. Thus inmates are housed at private facilities under the constant watch of the Director of the Department of Corrections. Some private facilities housing inmates are the Cimarron Correctional Facility, the Davis Correctional Facility, and the Lawton Correctional and Rehabilitation Facility.
