Maine State prison is sited in Warrant Maine. This is a medium-closed custody prison for high-risk offenders. Capable of housing 916 adult males, this location houses minimum custody offenders when they are waiting for their transfer to a minimum-security facility. In Maine State prison, high-risk offenders are placed in the Special Management Unit. It has three sections with single cells. Reception inmates and protective custody prisoners are placed in Closed-Custody units of six sections of single cells. Minimum and medium custody offenders are housed in the Medium Unit in double cells.

Maine State Prison Visitation Hours
To be able to visit a prisoner at Maine State Prison, you must be pre-approved by the administration. If you have this approval, you may visit a particular inmate at the following times:
Thursdays to Sundays: 8:30am-10:30am, and 1:30pm-3:30pm
If the inmate is considered a general population prisoner in the Closed Custody or Medium Custody Unit, they have additional visitation hours from Thursdays to Sundays at 6:30pm-8:30pm.
All non-contact visits must seek an appointment from Monday to Wednesday by phoning the prison during the following times:
8:30am-11am and 2pm-5pm

Institutional Programs, Academic Programs, Other Programs
Maine State Prison offers several academic, institutional and spiritual programs geared towards the rehabilitation and positive development of its prisoners. These are:
- Life skills and academic programs such as computer instruction, typing, science, college prep math, English, GED prep.
- Tutoring, remedial/literacy reading by prison tutors, teachers, and literacy volunteers
- Special programs include music, language, literature, writing, pre-release exit program
Maine State Prison Mental Health Services:
This department assesses and treats the planning of prisoners with severe behavioral disorders and mental illnesses. Treatment involves cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, supportive counseling, group therapy as well as psychopharmacological medications. Crisis intervention, psycho-educational groups, i.e. anger management, sex offenders, etc. discharge planning are also provided.

Maine State Prison Social Services:
Every inmate at Maine State Prison is assigned a Correctional Care and Treatment Worker or Correctional Caseworker. These professionals serve the needs of the Maine Department of Corrections and will meet the inmate upon his arrival. They assist prisons in developing their individual case plan (ICP) and release plans. Case workers play an important role in diffusing disruptive situations.
Maine State Prison Industries Program:
Wood Shop- Inmates are involved in making various wood products such as hutches, cutting boards, bureaus, etc. Finishing the products are completed in the Finishing Shop. These products are sold via the Prison Showroom. Money collected goes towards supporting craft and industries programs.
Upholstery Shop- Inmates are involved in making canvas bags, cushions, etc. that are also sold in the Prison Showroom.
Small Products Line- Inmates are involved in making wood novelties.
