Massachusetts Correctional Institution Profile and Valuable Information

Managed by the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, the Massachusetts Correctional Institution is an all-male maximum-security prison located in the city of Walpole. This prison can hold about 633 inmates at any given time is known for housing Level 6 inmates, those who require maximum security. A distinguishing feature about this prison is that it is located between the towns of Norfolk and Walpole and that it has a South Walpole mailing address.

This prison has a Departmental Disciplinary Unit for inmates who are difficult to handle when they are incarcerated within the walls. All inmates who are incarcerated here are given to faculties for reception and diagnostic purposes. Inmates are mentally and physically examined, programs are suggested for them and they are sent to different locations within the facility.

The Massachusetts Correctional Institution was opened in the year 1955 in place of Charlestown State Prison, which was the oldest prison in the country at that time. In the 1970s, when Walpole was more commonly known as Cedar Junction, this prison was infamous for being one of the most violent prisons in the United States of America.

Visiting Hours and Locating an Inmate

An inmate’s housing unit is what decides the date and time on which a visitor can visit them. All visitors must arrive at the facility and take a number from the dispenser. They are also required to fill out a visitation request form. Visitors must always keep in mind the visitation time for their loved ones and the rules and regulations that are followed within the facility for their safety. There is no specific visitation time for attorneys of inmates as long as they have ID cards and sufficient documents for the same.

The following is the schedule for different housing units of the Massachusetts Correctional Institution:

  • A1, A2, A3, B1, B4, B5, B6, B8 – contact visits are on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays from 1:00 pm to 8:30 pm and on Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

  • B2, B3, B7, and Orientation House Units – no contact visits are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00 pm to 8:30 pm, and Saturdays from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

  • Ten Block – Inmates within this housing unit can have up to two visits in a week and the visits are only through an appointment. Scheduling of an appointment via phone call to the institution is from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm daily and a minimum of 24 hours’ gap is required before visitation for making an appointment. Visitation timings are on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Weekends between 8:30 am to 9:30 am, 10:00 am to 11:00 am, 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm, 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

  • BMU Inmates – Visitors for this facility are also required to make an appointment at least 24 hours before their visitation. Appointments can be made from Monday to Friday between 8:00 am to 2:30 pm and 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Visitation hours for the weekdays are from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. While visitations on the weekends are from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

  • Departmental Disciplinary Unit – The visits to this housing unit is on a non-contact basis. Only two adults and two children below the age of 14 are allowed within the facility at any given time. Visitations are only for a length of an hour. Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays are the only days for a visit to this institution. Visitation starts from 9:00 till 8:00 pm. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are reserved days for attorney visitations.

Massachusetts Correctional Institution Inmates Programs

Several programs are offered to inmates who are incarcerated within the Massachusetts Correctional Institution. Depending on the evaluation of an inmate upon their arrival, different programs are suggested for them. These programs range from work programs to self-help programs. All programs are meant to help inmates to better themselves in different ways.

One of the work programs that is offered to inmates of this prison is that they can earn a menial wage by making license plates for the manufacture of license plates. This wage is kept aside for inmates and given to them at the time of their release.

Substance abuse treatment, anger management, parenting programs, and substance abuse programs are some of the self-help programs offered by the facility. All programs form a positive environment and have the goal of reforming an inmate into becoming better versions of themselves during their stay at the facility.
