Missouri State Prison opened in 1836 and served as the state penitentiary for the state of Missouri. It was the main prison in the state of Missouri. The prison closed down in 2004 and the operations of the prison were shifted to the Jefferson City Correctional Center with effect from 1st September 2004. Since then the prison has been open for public and private tours.

Missouri State Prison Number of Inmates
The inmates of Missouri state prison were shifted to Jefferson City Correctional Center (JCCC). JCCC has a capacity of 1,996.
The prison is housed in a land of 42 acres. The prison is a medium to maximum prison. It has eight housing units to accommodate inmates. The units can accommodate 288 inmates in each unit. The units are organized into two blocks A and B with the central services building located in between.
The central services unit has a medical unit (with 29 beds), classrooms, library, office, gymnasium, and laundry. It also has a work area where inmates work for the Department of Social Welfare.

The Missouri State Prison can be visited as a part of a historical tour. A 2-hour history tour is offered for visitors. The visitors would be taken around the prison to see the facilities and would be explained about the history of the facility. There are also 3-hour tours, mystery tours, and photography tours that visitors can book to see the prison. There is also a museum opposite the prison.
The JCCC has inmates and they can be visited on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm or 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm. An appointment form has to be filled and approval taken before the visit can be possible.
