Montana State Prison Information

Montana State Prison (MSP) is the largest penitentiary in the state. It is located in Deer Lodge Valley, which is 3.5 miles to the west of Deer Lodge town. The correction center is set in 68-acre premises and is equipped with all facilities needed to house all levels of inmates, including minimum, medium, close custody, and maximum custody.

MSP is an iconic correction facility in the state and houses some of the most notorious criminals of the state.

Number of Inmates

MSP houses approximately 1, 600 male inmates. Inmate population includes general and special management prisoners, inmates with mental health issues, those on pre-hearing confinement or detention, and those confined to Locked Housing for serious or constant behavioral issues.

Visitation Hours

The current visitation system within MSP permits visits on a first-come basis for 2 days in a week. A pilot for a new visitation system is currently active. The new system permits visitors to choose and reserve their slot. Visitors also get to increase the number of visitation days to 4 days from the existing 2 days. Visitors will not be charged for scheduling visits. For more information on how to schedule your visits using the new visitation system, visit the Montana Department of Corrections Official Website.

Currently, visitation has been temporarily reduced to 2 days. Visitors can visit only on Saturdays and Sundays. Children are allowed on both these days.

Normal visiting hours at MSP are as follows:

  • Thursday - 2:30 – 7:30 p.m. - Adults only
  • Friday- 2:30 – 7:30 p.m. - Adults only
  • Saturday- 2:30 – 7:30 p.m.- Children can visit
  • Sunday- 2:30 – 7:30 p.m. - Children can visit

Visiting hours for prisoners in Locked Housing is limited. Visitation must be scheduled beforehand by calling (406) 846-1320 ext. 2313. The call must be made at least 24 hours before the intended visitation. Calls are accepted from Wednesday to Sunday, between 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

No visitors are allowed for inmates on pre-hearing confinement and disciplinary detention.

Warden Information

Lynn Guyer is the current warden of MSP.

Management Information

MSP has a staff strength of 640 comprising both uniformed and non-uniformed employees. The management implements different levels of supervision for different custody levels.

The management structure of MSP includes the warden at the top of the management hierarchy. There are 4 associate wardens and 3 bureau chiefs for inmate level-wise supervision.

Institutional Programs

MSP, in association with Montana Correctional Enterprises (MCE), contributes to the Work and Reentry Center, a 192-bed facility housed outside MSP’s fenced perimeter. Minimum-custody inmates are housed in this center. They work on a dairy and ranch program run on a 35, 000-acre land, and operated by the MCE.

MSP and MCE offer work to these inmates through the program. They also offer inmates education, recreation, clinical services, among others.
