The Penitentiary of New Mexico houses the highest security group of offenders. The prison includes three levels: Level-II a least-restricted unit, a level 4 and 5 unit, and a level 6 highest security unit. This special level system introduced by the New Mexico Corrections Department is designed to keep the inmate/s who can’t be managed or kept in the general population. The process to manage such inmates is entirely upon behaviorally driven programs wherein they get some special privileges. Once they start demonstrating positive or right behavior in a specified period of time, they will get more privileges. Every inmate is observed for a specified period of time and expected to demonstrate apt behavior.

The most brutal and frightening one was held in 1980 when a group of inmates were drunk and got in a violent fight, which lasted for over 48 hours. As per the official reports, the brutal riot took 33 lives, left many injured, and caused damages in millions of dollars. The prison turned into a smoking husk and many inmates were slapped with criminal charges for the brutal uprising It’s considered as the worst prison riot in the history of America. It, in fact, resulted in some severe repercussions. Many people claim that it is cursed or haunted.

The inmates of level IV, V, and VI can be met only through a prior appointment on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 am, 10:30 am, and 12:30 pm.
