The Putnamville Correctional Facility is a medium-security male prison that is operated the Indiana Department of Corrections. Built to accommodate 1,950 inmates, it houses 2,400 inmates at most times. Established in 1914, it initially housed inmates who were serving sentences for minor crimes and offenses by working on the prison's dairy and farm operations spread out over a 4,350-acre plot. The Indiana State Farm was given authorization by the Indian General Assembly in 1913 as a minimum-security prison for inmates convicted of misdemeanors. Construction began in 1914 and it was made operational the next year when it began to receive offenders. It was reclassified into a medium-security prison from a minimum-security holding in 1977 and started to house felons. It's population simultaneously rose from 1,650 to 2,500. In 2009, around 917 acres from the original 3,500 acres were allocated to the Department of Natural Resources.
