The Rhode Island Maximum Security Prison was opened in 1878 as the State Prison and Providence County Jail. It was originally designed to house 252 inmates and was modeled on New York's Auburn Style where all inmate cells were in a single building which was a hexagonal stone tower. The facility was expanded in 1924 with 198 cells in two cell-blocks, nicknamed as "Steel City". It is the oldest correctional institution in Rhode Island.
