Rio Grande Detention Center Profile and Valuable Information

Rio Grande Detention Center (RGDC) is a well-guarded detention center with very little information in the public domain. It is equipped with rows of triple razor wire, a reinforced perimeter fence, electronic detection systems and comprehensive surveillance of the entire prison perimeter.

Rio Grande Detention Center mail and visitation rules

RGDC classifies detainees under Restricted, High, Medium-High, Low and Medium-low level categories.

High, Medium High, Low and Medium-low level detainees can be visited Sunday through Monday between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm. On Saturdays, they may be visited between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

Restricted Housing detainees can only be visited on Wednesdays, between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

In case the visitor is a legal counsel or attorney, visitation is permitted 7 days a week between 7:00 am and 9:00 pm. Clergy may visit inmates any time of the day, provided they have prior consent from the Chaplains’ office and special visitors are mandated to seek Warden’s approval for the visit, 5 days in advance.

The general time allotted to each visitation is no more than 30 minutes and can have no more than 2 adult visitors. Longer visitation period may be permitted to family members, special visitors permitted by the Warden or those approved by Law if they have traveled a significantly long distance to the facility.
