St. Clair Correctional Facility is a state’s prison in Springville, St. Clair County, Alabama. The facility was built in 1983 and currently houses only adult male prisoners. The facility has a maximum capacity of 1,514 inmates. St. Clair Correctional Facility is known to be one of the most dangerous prisons in Alabama.

Two years after the facility was built, there was a major riot in the prison in April 1985. Armed prisoners had held 5 employees including the warden and 22 others as hostages. In September 2014, the facility was again in the news for the incident involving the death of 6 inmates in the prison. In 2016, another prisoner was found dead under mysterious circumstances. The media has often termed the facility as a ‘lawless’ prison.

The St. Clair Correctional facility is a close custody correctional facility that manages the Alabama correctional industries' vehicle restoration and a chemical plant. It also provides on-site classrooms and academic, vocational, and educational programs by the Gadsden State Community College.

In addition to this, the facility has a total care medical wing that offers dental care and other facilities like a cancer unit, a dialysis center, an emergency room, and a diagnostic services lab that is operated by a private medical contractor. Inmates can also sign up for the New Outlook Therapeutic Community Program at the prison.

 

St. Clair Correctional Facility Visiting Hours

The facility is open for visitors four days a week. Inmates are divided into two groups based on their cell blocks. The visiting hours start from 8 AM to 11 AM and then from 12 PM to 3 PM. Family members and friends of the prisoners need to reach the facility premises 30 minutes before their visit. Visitors need to fill out an application prior to visiting the facility. They can contact the administration office at 205-467-6111 to know visitation schedules for the inmate they wish to see.

You must also check if the inmate you are allowed to see is in solitary confinement or if they have visitation rights before you visit them at the facility.

As per prison rules, only a maximum of 4 adults and 4 minors can visit an inmate at a time. Visitors over the age of 16 need to carry valid proof of identity with them. Minors also need an identity proof and can carry their birth certificates if they don’t have any other proof. You can only carry a maximum of $20 with you. No food or beverages are permitted in the prison premises except for baby food in a maximum of two bottles. Visitors are also not permitted more to carry any electronic items or wear caps, hats, and scarves.

Visitors must make sure to not dress in the same color as the prison uniform and wear clothing that is below the knees. Slippers, open shoes, revealing or provocative clothes, and materials like sheer and net are prohibited inside the prison premises. Handbags, keys, and purses should be left outside in your car or submitted at the facility before meeting the inmates.
