Tabor Correctional Institution Profile and Valuable Information

A correctional facility, situated in Tabor City, in the American state of North Carolina, is a relatively new correctional facility compared to older prisons in the state, like Sanford and Central Prison. It is called the Tabor Correctional Institution and it opened as late as September 2008 and has resident felons belonging to a mixed class of security level; closed (maximum security), medium and minimum custody inmates.

It was built by the State of North Carolina mainly because of other jails, including in the county of Columbus that is the seat of the Tabor facility, were facing extreme overcrowding issues; so much so, that they didn't have room for newly convicted felons. Construction on the facility began in 2006, with the Sundaland Fire Company aiding in the building and designing process. Around the prison, is a double fence. It cost the taxpayers $94 million to build the facility and get the requisite procedures for water supply and sewage in order.

Through the utilization of an inmate labor force, costs were substantially reduced; private contractors would have escalated the cost. Originally, minimum-security level inmates were not housed at Tabor, but in 2014, they were permitted residency, taking the inmate population up by a significant percent. The Tabor Correctional Institution was subjected to several training preparation exercises before it was officially inaugurated.

These mock techniques were part of a process to train officers in the tasks of defending themselves in the event of an attack by inmates within the facility. Training drills also included staff being prepped to handle potential hostage situations within the prison. When it opened, it had well over 1,500 inmates.

The facility has since provided employment opportunities to the surrounding community that was an otherwise deprived area, monetarily. It is one of the largest facilities in the State of Northern Carolina and in 2014, eminent officials from Panama paid a visit to observe the working of the facility and get some insight before opening another prison.

The prison offers many programs worth consideration, in the hope of bettering the welfare of inmates; programs for a GED and continuing education, basic medical and dental facilities and substance and alcohol abuse therapies and treatment are provided. Some psychiatric care is also provided.

Some noteworthy history

Under the administration of George Kenworthy, when the facility had just opened its doors, there were a few incidents that shed some bad light on the atmosphere of the institution. First, inmates had apparently assaulted officers; second, a potential case of exposure to tuberculosis was detected.

This was negated after testing was done, but nonetheless, the damage had been done and newspapers had a field day reporting all kinds of derogatory information. At the same time, a staff officer was charged with drug-dealing, but not on the premises of the facility, and some other Tabor officers were accused of stealing.
