Wildwood Correctional Center Profile and Valuable Information

Located near to the city of Kenai, Alaska is the Wildwood Correctional Center, currently under the jurisdiction of the Alaska Department of Corrections. The entire institute in itself is made up of three facilities namely, the WildWood Correctional Center, the Wildwood Pretrial Facility and the Wildwood Transitional Program. The institution in itself is has a capacity of 360 beds that are occupied by both female and male adult felons and misdemeanor prisoners of all custody levels.

The Wildwood Correctional Center of Alaska was opened in the year 1983 and was originally an army station. In the year 1951, the area of the institution served as a communication base for the U.S. Army. Later, in the year 1965, the area was transformed into a U.S. Air Force Station. Ultimately, the Kenai Native Association erected a correctional and pre-trial facility known as the Wildwood Correctional Center in place of the Air Force area.

Visiting Hours and Locating an Inmate

The Wildwood Correction Center is comprised of three facilities that each have their respective visiting hours.

Wildwood Correctional Center:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Frida y: 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
  • Weekends and Holidays: 10:30 am - 9:30 pm

Wildwood Pretrial Facility:

  • Weekdays: 9 am, 10 am, 7 pm, 8 pm (all visits are about an hour-long)
  • Weekends and Holidays: 9 am, 10 am, 2 pm, 3 pm, 7 pm, 8 pm

Wildwood Transitional Program:

  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
  • Monday (only adults): 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
  • Weekends and Holidays: 1 pm - 3 pm, 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
  • Saturdays (only adults): 9 am - 10 am

Wildwood Correction Center Inmate Programs

To give inmates real-world experience and for helping them to earn a living once they are re-introduced to society, inmates can choose from many vocational programs that are offered by Wildwood Correction Center. Anger management and control, as a program is offered regularly to all inmates. Some of the specialized programs that are offered here include:

  • Life Success Substance Abuse Treatment (LSSAT): The LSSAT program is a 90-day intensive outpatient program that is meant to treat inmates who have committed substance abuse. The program functions on Cognitive Behaviour treatment and is evidence-based as well. The purpose of the program is to teach inmates life skills that will help them to lead an addiction-free life and that will help them to become a contributing member of society.

  • Education: For inmates who want to continue their education and improve on their interpersonal skills, Wildwood Correctional Center offers its educational program. Inmates learn how to read, write, communicate, manage a budget, learn about keeping skills, job finding, etc. The purpose of this program is to help inmates become self-sufficient upon their release.

  • Jobs: WCC in itself has several job positions that are offered to inmates so that they can purchase commissary items, pay bills or pay restitution. There are about 25-30 jobs that include food service, laundry, janitorial, seasonal and temporal jobs, etc.

  • Healthy Living: This is a 12-week program that aims at developing and improving the life skills of a person in various areas. It includes communication skills, stress management, developing/maintaining healthy relationships, coping with incarceration, conflict resolution/ problem-solving skills, and dealing with anxiety and other health issues.

    Anger Management: This is a special program that is offered to men and women of the institution for 12 weeks. In this program, inmates are educated about the alternatives to violence, communication, assertiveness, practical thinking and problem solving, conflict resolution and primarily how to keep a presence of mind to reduce violence.

  • Relapse Prevention: This is a 12-week program for those inmates who are in the institution for treating their addiction. This program recognizes the level of addiction of an inmate, their addiction’s nature, triggers and relapse warnings, and the factors that contribute to the abuse. Inmates become a part of a community that paves their way towards sobriety and prevents relapse. Inmates are also encouraged to develop positive support systems.

  • Parenting: A 12 week “active parenting” program is offered to inmates to help them strengthen their families. Inmates are taught developing skills to help them build self-esteem, responsibility, courage, and character in their children. Inmates are taught to develop non-violent and effective behavior, redirecting misbehavior and having the proper parent-child relationship. How to problem solve and cope with the stresses of parenting are also taught in this program, offered to both men and women at WCC.
