Judicial Records Connecticut: How to Get Free Judicial Records in the State of Connecticut?

Public records have been made available to the public as per the Connecticut Freedom of Information Act, also known as the FOIA, passed in the year 1975. This act mandates that all records pertaining to public agencies should be ready to disclose to the public, who have the right to inspect them as per their needs. Although, there are exceptions that bar certain records from being made public or sealed by the law, most government records and information is available for public perusal.

Court records also fall under this act, and unless deemed confidential, the public can view or inspect most court records. However, there are many different types of judicial records and depending on your particular need, specific steps need to be followed to obtain the one that you require. This article aims to shed some light on these specific steps that relate to obtaining different types of judicial records.

Steps to obtain different types of judicial records in the State of Connecticut

Transcript from court-hearing

If you need to obtain a copy of a written court transcript for any of the hearings, you need to make a request in writing and submit the same to the Court Reporters Office in the same judicial district as the court hearing. If you place your request via email, the request would not be heeded.

However, if you happen to write a letter, you must include:

  • The docket number for the case
  • Name or caption of the case
  • Name of the judge
  • The court where the case had been heard
  • The date for the case hearing
  • Your address, contact number, and name
  • Brief description of the particular section of the court hearing that you want to obtain. This section can refer to any part of the court proceeding.

In case, you wish to obtain some knowledge regarding the estimated cost or the estimated date of delivery for your requested court transcript, please make sure to mention the same in the letter that you write.

Copy of Divorce Decree

You can find the copy for your divorce document at the Clerk’s Office of the Judicial District that hosts the court where your divorce proceedings took place. This document is commonly known by the name of ‘Judgment File’ and you are required to provide the docket number as well as the name of your case while requesting the same from the Clerk’s Office.

There are additional fees associated with certifying and copying these documents. However, Judgment Files enjoy flat fees, unlike other court documents, which might charge you on a per-page basis for copying, while levying additional certification fees for certain documents.

 

Criminal Record or Motor Vehicle Record

If you need to obtain a copy of the motor vehicle record or criminal record for a particular arrest, you need to make an initial request at the court location, specific to where the arrest took place. You need to include the date of birth and name while requesting such records. The date of arrest can also be provided as additional information while making the request, as this helps streamline the process. The records that you request would be limited to the available records that belong to the particular court location where the request has been made.

To get specific information about a particular case or court records for a specific case, you need to get in touch with the Clerk’s Office for the court that belongs to the same geographical location, judicial district, housing session, juvenile matters or small claims court as the one, where the original case was heard.

Associated fees

As per the PA19-64, effective since 1st July 2019, the rate for obtaining a copy is $3 for each page. In the case the copy was previously produced, recopying the same records would cost you $1.75 for each page. If you are requesting a copy for state officials or any other entities that have been listed under C.G.S. §51-63(c), you are required to pay $2 per page.

In the case the copy was previously produced, recopying the same records would cost you $0.75 for each page. Expedited transcripts involve additional charges. The charges for documents and court records are $1 per page and that for administrative records is $0.25 per page.
