Glen Ellyn Illinois Overview and Crime Rate Statistics

Glen Ellyn is a village in the DuPage County of the state of Illinois, USA. It is a suburb located to the east of Wheaton and west of Lombard. It covers a land area of 6.61 square miles and has a population density of 4,152 people per square mile.

The first to settle on the land which is today recognized as Glen Ellyn was Deacon Winslow and his family in 1832 who had traveled all the way from New York. The village grew with the introduction of the railroad in 1849, and the first Congregational church was set up in town in 1862. A dam was built on a stream near the town which leads to the formation of Lake Glen Ellyn. The lake was named after the wife of Thomas E Hill who, with Philo Stacy, was responsible for the construction of the dam.

In 1900, the population of the town was recorded to include 793 people. This number grew to 7,680 people in 1930, 15,872 people in 1960, 24,844 people in 1990 and 26,999 people as recorded at the turn of the millennium.

The United States Census Bureau has noted in its records that there were about 27,450 people living in the village of Glen Ellyn in 2010. The latest estimates state that the population is approximately 28,045, which is a one percent increase over the past seven years. There are more women than men in Glen Ellyn with 51.1 percent of the population comprising of females. Children below the age of 18 make up 26.9 percent of the population of Glen Ellyn while about 14.8 percent of the people here are senior citizens above the age of 65.

The racial-ethnic demographic indicates that about 80.8 percent of the population identifies as white alone while 5.7 percent of the people identify as Hispanic or Latino. Among them, there were 26 cases of violent crime, one case of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, six cases of rape, six cases of robbery and 13 cases of aggravated assault. There were also 244 cases of property crime in Glen Ellyn along with 35 cases of burglary, 202 cases of larceny-theft, seven cases of motor vehicle theft and two cases of arson.

In 2015, there were a total of 565 criminal incidences reported in Glen Ellyn. Among them were 24 cases of violent crime, no case of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, three cases of rape, nine cases of robbery, 12 cases of aggravated assault, 275 cases of property crime, three cases of burglary, 233 cases of larceny-theft, five cases of motor vehicle theft and one case of arson.
