With a total geographical area of 627 square miles, Houston is the eighth most expansive city in the United States of America. Geographically, Houston is located 165 miles east of Austin, 112 miles west of the Louisiana border and 250 miles south of Dallas. 555.59 square miles of the total area is covered with the land while the remaining 22.3 square miles is covered by water. Water supply is not an issue with the city owning surface water rights 1.20 billion gallons of water per day and 150 million gallons of groundwater every day. The city has a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot, long, humid summers and mild winters.
According to the Rice University Kinder Institute for Urban Research, Greater Houston is “one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse metropolitan areas in the country.” Owing to its multiculturalism and a large number of immigrants, it boasts of the relatively low cost of living, strong job market proximity to Latin America and is a hub for refugee resettlement.
Known worldwide for its energy industry, as well as for biomedical research and aeronautics; renewable energy sources- wind and solar are growing economic bases in the city. The Houston GDP in 2016 was $478 billion making it the sixth largest in the USA. Circa 2013, Houston was named numero uno city US city, for job creation by the U.S. Bureau of Statistics.
There are four state universities in Houston and more than 300 private schools. The third largest the University of Houston, nationally recognized tier one research university has nearly 44,000 students on its 270-hectare campus.
As far as healthcare is concerned, the Texas Medical Centre contains the world's largest concentration of research and healthcare institutions, boasts of 49 medical institutions which are non-profit organizations. They employ more than 73,600 people and provide patient and preventive care and an avenue for education and research. The crime rate is the number of crimes committed per 100,000 people. The homicide data for 2015 and 2016 was 303, 302 respectively. FBI's Uniform Crime Report shows a downward trend of violent crime in Houston. There has been a massive drop in the number of "physical arrests" by the Houston Police Department over the last decade.
