How to Get a Birth Certificate in North Carolina?

North Carolina Vital Records is the issuing body of all certified copies of North Carolina birth records, divorce records, marriage records, and death certificate. These events must have occurred in North Carolina in order for you to order the record from North Carolina Vital Records.

Who May Order a North Carolina Birth Certificate:?

To obtain a certified copy of your North Carolina birth certificate, the following people may order:

- A person who needs legal determination for his or her property rights;

- A person who needs a copy of his or her own birth records. This person may also be a sibling, person’s spouse, father, mother, stepparents, ancestor-descendant, or stepchild;

- An authorized legal representative, attorney, or agent.

If you aren’t qualified to receive a verified copy of the birth certificate, you will be issued a non-certified version. This version of a birth certificate may only be used for informational reasons and cannot be utilized as a passport or identification. An uncertified State of North Carolina birth certificate is available for births that occurred from October 1, 1913, to the present.

How to Get a Birth Certificate in North Carolina
Certified copies of your North Carolina birth certificate may be a need as proof of citizenship, driver’s license, passport, for travel, social security, personal identification, school registration, and other legal matters. In North Carolina, certified copies of your birth certificate are available from the period of October 1, 1913, till the present.

How to Order Birth Records?


This is the most convenient way of ordering an official copy of your North Carolina birth certificate or other public records. The chances of making a clerical error are less when the information is entered by yourself. The forms are easy to complete. You can also make the necessary payment online when you order a birth certificate in North Carolina.


To submit the form online, you must obtain the forms from the office of North Carolina of Vital Records. Or you may download the form online. If you are requesting a copy of your own record, then you must provide a copy of government-issued ID. Examples include U.S. military ID, student ID, passport, driver’s license, etc.

To apply for a birth certificate on behalf of another individual such as your child, you must have legal documentation, like a court order.

If you were adopted, the following individuals may obtain a copy of your birth certificate:

- Yourself

- Your children

- Your adoptive parents

- Your spouse

- Your adoptive siblings

You must be able to provide proof of your relationship. Birth certificates with the adoptee’s original name including his or her birth mother’s name will be sealed and aren’t available.

Your completed form must include the following details:

- Name on your birth certificate

- Complete names of both parents

- Place of birth within North Carolina

- Date of birth

- Requestor’s relationship to the individual listed on the birth certificate

In case you have questions regarding your application, you may call the NC Vital Records office at 919-733-3000 between the hours of 8:00 am to 5 pm. You must be able to provide a copy of valid photo ID proof.

The Office of Vital Records is open five days a week, from Monday to Friday except on federal or state holidays.

The Fees

To obtain a copy of your birth certificate or several copies you must make a payment with a business or certified check or money order. Send this in with your application. The base fee is $24 and $15 for additional copies.
