How to Get a Birth Certificate in Michigan?

The Office of the State of Michigan Vital Records manages and issues Michigan birth records. The office maintains public records including birth records dating back to 1867. The Vital Records Office allows applicants to order birth records by mail, in person or online. The Office has fast-responding communication channels to address general queries of people regarding birth records.

How to Get a Birth Certificate in Michigan

Apply In Person

  • Visit the Michigan Office of Vital Records located at the following address:

333 S Grand Avenue,

1st Floor,

Lansing MI 48933 (corner of Grand Avenue & Kalamazoo Street).

  • Visit the office between 8.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday. Order for a birth certificate before or by 3.00 pm if you are looking to receive the certificate the same day.
  • Pay applicable fees. The current processing fee is $34. A detailed account process fee is available here. In the case of same-day delivery, you have to pay an extra fee of $12.
  • Make payment in cash. For same-day delivery, you can also use a credit card or money order.

You can use a check-in addition to the above payment modes if you are not requesting same-day delivery.

  • Wait for the processing time, which is usually 2 hours.

  • Note that the Vital Records office closes for recognized state holidays.

Order Birth Certificate Michigan by Mail

  • Print a birth certificate application form. The form may be available on the website of Michigan's Health and Human Services Division (MDHHS).

If the form is not available here, then you can obtain it at your local MDHHS office. You can find your local office address using the map here.

  • Include valid photo identification documents. Passport, driver’s license or a photo identification card issued by the state, are valid documents. See here for a complete list of valid photo identification documents for the purpose of ordering a Michigan birth certificate.
  • Include eligibility proof if you are ordering a birth certificate dating back to a period of fewer than 100 years. Such birth records are restricted documents and require proof of eligibility for access. Find out if you are eligible to place a request. 
  • Include applicable fee for processing your request. The current application fee is $34.00. Pay an additional $12.00 if you are requesting Expedite Search. Make payments using checks and money orders only. Make payments payable to the State of Michigan.

It takes 4 to 5 weeks for processing birth records if you are mailing using regular service. For an Expedite Service request, the processing time is 2 to 3 weeks. If the requested birth certificate is that of a newborn, the processing time can go up to 30 days.

Note that under Michigan Statutes, you are not eligible to order a birth certificate for your spouse. Your spouse needs to place a separate order for his or her own birth certificate. If you are placing an order as a parent or in any other capacity, find out if you fulfill the eligibility criteria.

You cannot order a birth certificate online for a deceased individual. You can order a birth certificate as an heir provided you fulfill eligibility criteria, but only through the mail.

  • Fill in self-explanatory fields and complete the ordering process. All major cards are accepted.
  • Make payment using a debit or credit card. The current applicable charges for online orders are available here.

You can choose a regular service or an expedited service. Processing of online birth records takes 1 to 2 business days if you are going for expedited service. Regular service takes 2 weeks.
