Huntsville is a city in the state of Alabama that covers an area of 209.05 square miles. In the 1950s, it was a cotton market town with up to 16,437 people when Senator John Sparkman brought a group of German rocket scientist to Redstone Arsenal to develop rockets for the US army.

The team developed a rocket that orbited the nation’s first satellite and was responsible for putting the first American in space and transporting the first astronaut to the moon. In this manner, the region became the country's space capital and a strategic post for the US Army.

According to Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) totals by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), crime in Hunstville amounted to 17,157 cases in 2016. These included, 15 cases of homicide, 153 cases of rape, 414 cases of robbery, 7,034 cases of assault, 1,701 cases of burglary, 6,925 cases of larceny and 914 cases of auto theft.

The 2015 reports showed that there were a total of 16,246 incidences. These included 18 cases of homicide, 129 cases of rape, 362 cases of robbery, 6,918 cases of assault, 1,754 cases of burglary, 6,309 cases of larceny and 774 cases of auto theft.

In 2012, the total was 22,234 cases with 1,696 cases of violent crime, 14 cases of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, 72 cases of rape, 456 robberies, 1,154 cases of aggravated assault, 9,261 property crimes, 2,165 burglaries, 6,386 larceny-thefts, 710 motor vehicle thefts and 20 cases of arson.

The law enforcement made a total of 12,328 arrest in 2016, including 11,036 adults and 476 juveniles. In 2015, they arrested 12,247 people among whom were 11,508 adults and 739 juveniles.

In 2016, the Huntsville Police department reported that there were 409 sworn officers and 185 civilians working in law enforcement. In 2015, there were 169 civilians and 414 sworn officers in the force.
