How to Get a Marriage License in the State of Minnesota

If you’re about to walk the aisle and begin life’s greatest journey, congratulations. However, before you embark on the next part of your fiancée’s and your journey, you will need to obtain a marriage license. Think of it as the State of Minnesota formally recognizing your marriage.

Minnesota Marriage License Eligibility

  • There aren’t any residency requirements in Minnesota.
  • You and your partner must not be married to another person at the time of application. Widowed or divorced individuals must provide a death certificate or proof of their divorce.
  • Individuals who are 18 years of age or older may get married without parental consent.
  • Individuals who are 16 and 17 years of age can apply for a marriage license with parental consent. Individuals who are under 16 years of age may not apply for a marriage license in Minnesota.
  • Same-sex marriage is legal and recognized in Minnesota as it is in the rest of the 50 states of the U.S as of 2015.
  • Minnesota does not recognize marriage between family members which includes cousins. This includes family members by adoption. There are a few exceptions to the rule as is the case between aboriginal people.
  • People who are developmentally disabled can marry with the consent of a commissioner of human services.

Minnesota Marriage License Records and Documentation

  • Both partners will have to fill out the application for a marriage license.
  • Sign it at the County Registrar and not before because it requires a witness.
  • ID accepted is a driver’s license, military ID, passport or a certified birth certificate. The ID must be valid.
  • Each partner has to provide their Social Security number, address, place, and date of birth, full legal name as well as telephone numbers. Minnesota asks for your post-marriage addresses as well as names.
  • Previously married individuals will need to provide the date of divorce or in the case of death, a death certificate.
  • Blood testing isn’t required in Minnesota for a marriage license.
  • If you have any documents which aren’t in English, it is better to have them translated into English in case you are asked for them.
 

Minnesota Marriage License Fees

Marriage license fees cost as much as $115 in Minnesota. However, you can reduce this to $40 if you complete at least twelve hours of premarital counseling. It’s not enough to say that you’ve completed the course, you’ll need to furnish proof as well. The license fees may be paid with cash, checks or with money orders. However, it’s a better idea to pay with cash as this reduces the risk of it not being accepted.

After giving in your application, you will have to wait for five days before receiving your marriage license. The license will be issued once the five days are up. After receiving your license, you can get married immediately. You do not have to wait to have your ceremony after receiving your marriage license.

Minnesota Marriage License Expiration

Marriage licenses expire six months from the day they are issued. If you haven’t got married in 6 months, you’ll have to apply for another marriage license. You will not receive an extension for a license that has expired or is close to expiring. Once a license expires, you will have to apply and pay the fee again. Once you receive another marriage license, you will have another six months to get married.

All residents and non-residents can apply for a marriage license anywhere in the state. Once you receive a marriage license, you are free to get married anywhere in the state of Minnesota.
