Montevallo Alabama: Crimes Statistics, Arrest and Population Information
Montevallo is a city which is located in the central region of Alabama, US. It is a part of the Shelby County. The University of Montevallo, which used to be previously known as the Alabama Girls' Industrial School (Agis), is located in this city. The school was renamed in 1923 to Alabama College, allowed the enrolment of men from 1956 and, from 1968, the university doors were opened to African American students.
The United States acquired the land, that is today known as the city of Montevallo, in 1814 from Creek Indians. During the Civil War, the city saw a skirmish between Union General Wilson's troops and the Confederate forces. In the early 1820s, a small settlement developed on the bank of Shoal Creek and was called Wilson's Hill, a name which was changed at a later date. Montevallo was incorporated as a city in 1848.

The US Census Bureau has recorded that the city of Montevallo had a population of 6,323 people in 2010. According to the latest estimates of the population as on July 1, 2017, there were an approximate of 6,636 people in town the town of Montevallo, which is a 5.4 percent increase through the seven years. About 54.1 percent of the people of Montevallo are women and 15.1 percent of the people are children below the age of 18.
In the racial-ethnic demographic, about 70.2 percent of the population identifies as white. Meanwhile, about 24.6 percent were noted to identify as African American, 5.7 percent identified as Hispanic, 1.8 percent were people of mixed races, 0.6 percent were Asian and 0.3 percent of the population identified as Native American. Further, about 6.1 percent of the inhabitants of the city of Montevallo are foreign-born and 10.6 percent speak a language other than English at home.
It has also been noted by the US census that about 86.7 percent of the population older than 25 years in Montevallo are high school graduates or have pursued higher education, while 25.9 percent of the people have attained bachelors' degrees or have studied further.
Among the biggest employers in Montevallo are the education, health care and social service sector which employs about 26.9 percent of the workforce, the retail trade which occupies about 15.7 percent of the people and the arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation and food services industry which engages about 10.7 percent of the people of Montevallo.
Crime in Montevallo Alabama
The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has noted that in the year of 2016, Montevallo had recorded a total of 326 criminal incidences. These included 14 cases of violent crime, three cases of rape, three cases of robbery, eight cases of aggravated assault, 149 cases of property crime, 24 cases of burglary, 121 cases of larceny-theft and 4 cases of motor vehicle theft.
In 2015, there were a total of 183 criminal incidences reported in Montevallo. Among them were three cases of rape, five cases of robbery, 19 cases of burglary, 118 case of larceny and 10 cases of motor vehicle theft.
To combat crime, there were 17 people employed under the law enforcement agency of Montevallo. These include 13 sworn officers and four civilians. There were a total of 350 arrests made in the year 2016. Among those arrested were nine juvenile offenders and 341 adults.
